Educators and health professionals joined representatives from the Cayman Diabetes Association and Cayman Pharmacy Group for today's Diabetes Day Camp -- a training session aimed at teaching them how to help and support children living with diabetes.
As it's the most commonly diagnosed form of the disease in children, most of the work done today focused on Type 1 diabetes. Organisers say that open dialogue between educators, parents, health professionals, peers and children with diabetes is necessary to help them maintain healthy, active lives.
While Type 1 diabetes was the focus of the day, experts point out that Type 2 diabetes is by far the more common form of the disease, accounting for at least 90% of the cases diagnosed.
Nurse Angela Hunt says that our eating habits and views on weight and food in the Caribbean has led to a rise of Type 2 diabetes cases in the Caribbean, and insists that people need to be aware of the risks and dangers that the disease poses and learn to manage and prevent it where possible.
